Seniority
Element I: Family Heritage

Seniority is the recognition of someone's longevity in life, their profession, or other situation in which an individual has achieved a level of precedence due to a claim of time or demonstrated ability. As you can see, Seniority has many applications. Our family considers one of these applications very important; it is called "Respect for Elders".

In many cultures around the world, to be a "Respected Elder" is one of the most honored positions an individual can achieve. To become "An Elder", or a "Wise One" means that person has a great many things to teach us if we take the time to learn from them. Here are some of our Family's basic guidelines for Seniority as it regards "Respect for Elders".
- At Meals (except breakfast) assist or wait for elders to be seated before taking your own seat. Offer food first to the elders at the table. These are signs of respect for their Seniority.
- Stand the first time elders enter a room where you are. You may keep your seat after that if they should come and go.
- Refer to elders by their last names unless they ask you to call them by their first name. You may use the terms "Sir" or "Ma'am" if you do not know an elders name.
- Be aware especially when elders are older to be gentle in your speech and your gestures. Because of their age they may be very sensitive to loud noises or abrupt behavior.
Most importantly, seek to learn what they can teach you, although it may not come easy. Like an oyster, you must first pry it open to find the pearl inside.
