Fire Drills
Element II: Family Management

We schedule drills throughout the year for Family member safety. Mom and Dad can answer any questions you may have about what to do.

Get out and stay out is a simple strategy that saves lives. To make the most of it we need to plan ahead.
Install Smoke Detectors
Outside each sleeping area and on each level of our home including the basement.
Know Two Ways Out
Draw a diagram of our home and plan two ways out of every room especially the bedrooms. If the escape route will take us out a second story window, be sure we have a safe way to reach the ground.
Get Out Fast
Don't stop for anything not even pets. Get to a neighbors home and call the fire department.
Crawl Low Under Smoke
Smoke rises with the heat. Crawl low to the floor. Get down on your hands and knees and crawl to the nearest exit.
Make An Escape Plan
There is no time to waste in a fire. Plan and practice how to escape a fire in case of a real emergency.
Practice The Plan
At least twice a year have a fire drill. Make a family member the monitor, to sound the alarm and make sure everyone participates. Most fires occur when people are asleep. Begin the practice drill from the bedroom with the door closed. Get out quickly and carefully.
In an Apartment or Office Building
Use the stairs never use the elevator which can stop between floors leaving you trapped.
Don't Go Back No Matter What
Make sure once you are out stay out. If people are trapped firefighters have the best chance to rescue them.
If You Are Trapped
Close all doors between you and the fire. Stuff cracks around the doors and windows to keep smoke out. Wait near he window with a flashlight or something light colored to signal with. If there is a phone in the room call the fire department to tell them where you are.
Choose A Meeting Place
Everyone should gather at one meeting place outside, at the front of the house of possible to wait for the fire department to arrive. Everyone should know how to call the fire department using the 911 emergency code.
Expect the Unexpected
When all family members know the basic plan practice in the dark. Make sure to test all possible routes and make sure everyone who is able can work all doors, windows and locks.
